Loving Life with a Vision

Vision boards are common goal-attaining tools. I love to spend time cutting out pictures,images, and words that represent who I am and who I aspire to be. Pulling out my rubber cement and making acollage from all the pretty images is both sticky and fun. This year, when thinking about making avision board for “Falling Madly in Love with Life” I hit a bit of a snag. If the goal is to embrace and see the best ineverything I already have and am, then how can I make a board of what I aspire to be?

Here is what I came up with:

I will have two vision boards. The first board is the “Falling Madly in Lovewith Life” board and it is a celebration of my life now. The board contains not only images of mycurrent life, but also images and words that evoke gratitude and a sense ofawe. Anything that helps me feel like anincredibly talented, beautiful, blessed woman goes on this board. This board is a reminder to embrace all thatis fabulous in the moment.

When life feels sluggish or downright difficult, this boardcan bring a smile to my face. When I’mannoyed and feeling less-tha-luminous, my board can remind me of all theamazing parts of life.

The second board is a traditional vision board and itexemplifies all the wonderful places my current fabulous life will lead. I know that as I appreciate my body and allthe wonderful work it does for me, I will want to take better care of it byeating healthier and exercising it. Thisnatural evolution leads to the lovely, healthy lean physique on my traditionalvision board.

The two boards work together. One evokes gratitude, joy, and the importanceof tending to what matters. The otherlifts and inspires when I’m feeling lazy or lethargic. It helps me remember where I am going and howI’ll get there.

Try the two vision board route! Again, it doesn’t matter if they are oncanvas, paper, or in an electronic file. The important part is finding visual images that stir and excite!

Happy Happy New Year!

I love starting a fresh new year and 2012 is going to be afantastic one. The luminous theme forthis year is “Falling Madly in Love with Life”. Life, like people, isn’t perfect. Life will always come with ups and downs. Some moments are magical and some we wishwould pass quickly. However, there isalways a choice on how we view our lives. We can focus on what is wrong with life (and there ALWAYS will besomething wrong) or we can focus on the magic in life.

In 2012 we will be focusing on the magic of life and thosemoments that take our collective breaths away. I’ve been lucky enough to have some truly magical moments in life- thekind that hit you over the head in amazement. I’ve fallen perfectly in love. I’ve lived across the streets from a castle and literally wandered someof the most gorgeous parts of the world. I’ve studied in amazing places and swam in perfect seas. But those are the exceptions and not the normof daily life.

In 2010, I returned home to the U.S. after living in Europefor two years. It was anadjustment!!! It was a hugeadjustment. In Prague, if I was having abad day, I could jump on a tram and ride by the castle or the CharlesBridge. It never failed to snap me backto my wonderful reality. Here in Tampa,FL I don’t have magical fairytale castles around the corner. 2011 was a year of discovering the beauty ofa seemingly mundane life. I’d like toshare what I’ve discovered for myself this past year with all my lovelyreaders.

I also want to take it to the next level.

This year, my goal for each of us is to fallin love with our lives RIGHT NOW! Notafter losing 20 pounds, landing the perfect jobs and finding Mr. Right , butRIGHT NOW! Loving life right now mightmean facing the reality of dirty dishes in the sink and a screaming baby in thenext room. Loving life with all theimperfections isn’t always easy, but it is do able.

Loving life right now is also one of the crucial pieces increating a gorgeous future. Happinessand gratitude will always attract more happiness and gratitude. Looking for the magic in ordinary momentswill stir something surprising up in life. It stirs up more magic and more joy than you thought possible. Falling in love with life means more momentsof laughing through tears and pushing through the hard times and move into thebright and beautiful future around the corner.

Happy Monday!

I hope everyone had a fabulous weekend. The weather here in Florida was perfect. After our afternoon of service -which turned out to be less helping sick children and more scrubbing toilets- I had the chance to attend a gorgeous wedding and then a singles event (so that I can start working towards a gorgeous wedding of my own).

Alas, the wedding of the friend was beautiful but my singles conference was not. Such is the life of a single woman. However things are looking up for me! I got hit on in Target this morning before work. He told me how beautiful I was and then gave me his number and email. I'm not planning on acting on it, but what a lovely boost to my morning.

With Thanksgiving coming up soon I wanted to share a few things I'm grateful for . . .

* I have the best family in the world (I know I'm biased)!

* I live in such a gorgeous place. The weather is absolutely perfect this time of the year. I want to pinch myself!

* My new place is looking prettier and prettier every day. I know I haven't posted pictures yet. I'll do a full reveal when it's all together. Beauty is something that I value and living in a lovely place feels magical to me.

* Yesterday while I wrote a paper and took a final, my little dog just sat next to me smiling at me like I'm the greatest human in the world. It's pretty hard not to feel special after a moment like that.

Happy 50th Friday's Fancies {AV}! It's such a fun way to start a weekend. Don't forget to hop over and see all the golden masterpieces on her blog. I love browsing and making an outfit all my own. Day dreaming with no price limits opens my minds and just lets me play. Today I'm playing with gold, but in a monochromatic, feminine way. I slipped in an inexpensive H&M necklace in honor of the new H&M store that opened yesterday in Tampa! Yay!

With H&M on every corner, it quickly became a staple of my European shopping. More than once since returning home I've wanted to hit my favorite haunt again. It's the perfect place to try on trendy pieces for an itty bitty budget. I don't know about you, but I'm reluctant to spend $50+ dollars on a trend that may or may not work on me. H&M is the answer! (Forever 21 is also a great answer)

So, what is everyone up to this weekend? For Veteran's Day my entire office is leaving early to go serve at various community centers. I'll be serving at the All Children's Hospital in Saint Pete. I can't tell you how wonderful it is to work for an organization that believes in giving back and doing more in the community.

This weekend there will be dancing and celebrating! I really wish I had this gold outfit to wear.

My Beauty Best Friend

I'd have to dig in order to find the WORST picture of me ever taken. I was in after my freshman year in high school. I had decided that my widows peak was terrible and needed to be gone. In one sudden burst of inspiration while shaving my legs, I quickly shaved off my widows peak. Problem solved? No, not really. Soon I had strange stubble on the top of my head. Thinking about hair growing out is painful. Thinking of one tiny patch of hair growing out on the top of your face is excruciating.

I was also blessed to have horrible acne. In retrospect, it wasn't any worse than typical teenage acne, BUT I was not the girl with lovely skin. When you combine this all together, I have a picture of me, forever immortalized in the play bill for "On the Town", with a strange spiky widow's peak and red speckled skin.

Big pores and acne prone, I've always loathed my skin. As I've gotten older, I've learned that my skin is actually very sensitive and when it's perfectly cleaned and moisturized, it can be quite pretty. Harsh acne products only make things worse. Too much foundation and other make up can make things worse. So what has made a HUGE difference for me?

Clarisonic!

It's not cheap and I know now there are all kinds of affordable "skin clean systems" (of which I have no clue about . . . maybe they work? maybe they don't). I love my Clarisonic. Last year I received an email from mom asking me if I'd want a gadget or a gift card for one of my Christmas gifts. Intrigued I said ''gadget" and I unwrapped the Clarisonic Mia. The Mia is a less powerful version of Clarisonic. It cleans your skin gently and thoroughly and leaves your skin ready to drink up anything else you want to put on it. Whether it's my a.m. serum and moisturizer or my p.m. serum and night cream . . . my skin is ready, soft, glowing, and fantastic.

I know some of the online reviews say it changed their skin overnight. For me, it wasn't overnight, but a year later, my skin is so much softer, cleaner, younger and healthier than it was two years ago. That alone makes the price tag worth it. I also love that by using it I'm caring for the skin I've been given. It's not a cover-up or an illusion. My skin is just happier and healthier and I thought you should know.

Tonight I was asked to share a spiritual thought for Relief Society . . . a message about service before making blankets for children in need. I thought through the topic and planned a sweet, uplifting, make-you-want to change the world message. I like messages to be hopeful, bright and make you ready to take action.

This morning as I woke up, I felt strongly like I should share two experiences . . . personal experiences . . . depressing experiences. I fought it all day and then wrote out a message with the experiences sandwiched between uplifting, joyful messages. When I stood to speak, only the experiences tumbled out. I felt exposed and vulnerable, with all the peppy parts of me washed away. I knew it was what needed to be shared.

But it's just so hard to self-disclose like that. I used to be the girl that self-disclosed all over the place . . . oozing truth, honesty and feelings. Something has changed in me. Maybe it's the coaching and the counseling, where self-disclosure comes carefully, thoughtfully and rarely? Maybe it's just growing older and a little more guarded?

For all the awkwardness I feel now and felt while exposing my heart and experiences to a room full of women, I'm grateful that I did. I believe that when we do what we know we should, even when it's difficult, wonderful things are in store. There is no other way!

Authentic communication isn't just about the happy, the peppy and the sweet . . . it cuts to the heart of a matter and speaks soul to soul.

The Desires of Your Heart (and Pan Am too!)

I want to apologize for my spotty blogging. The truth is that I have been living in the 80's since mid-September. I have been living sans internet at home. I thought I'd be able to get by with internet at work, but increased work at work (imagine that) made it next to impossible to do much of anything online.

For my friends with whom I've lost touch, I'm so sorry.

For my readers who don't even bother to read anymore, give me another chance.

Has everyone watched Pan Am on ABC? I love it! In fact, my thoughts today are inspired (in part) by a moment in the pilot episode of the show.

I'm a firm believer that we will always receive according to the deep, deep, deep desires of our hearts. Before you throw your computer on the ground and start yelling at me and blaming me for any and all the bad things that have happened to you, give me a chance here. An example from my life is that I'm more than a little bummed that I'm not a darling housewife and mom at this point in life. I am. I admit it. However, in the pilot episode of the show Pan Am Laura (the pretty blonde above) is getting ready for her dream wedding and she sees her sister's suitcase open with her passport inside. What does she do? She runs. She runs out on her wedding and into the life as a Pan Am stewardess. I watched it and something welled up inside me. I knew to my very core that I could relate to her. I knew immediately that seeing and exploring the world firsthand was/is a massive priority to me -perhaps more than I'd ever considered.

When I married I will never wonder "what if". What if I had married in my early twenties the way I almost did? Would I have had the same opportunities to travel? Maybe. Maybe not. I'll never know. What I do know is that NOW I have had so many experiences abroad and I love them all.

It makes me want examine my desires, my deep, deep, deep desires and to make sure that they are in line with my life goals and my values.

Do you think you can change your desires?

I do.

I believe that through focus, habits, and prayer, bit by bit our desires can be molded to what we truly need in life.

Take a moment quiet moment today and think about your inner desires. Is there anything that needs changing?

I've already found a few tweaks to make in mine.

How was Halloween weekend? I had a nasty cold, so it wasn't all that exciting for me, but I made some fun decorations for my front porch and am loaded up with candy for the trick o' treaters tonight. I also bought Harry some cute horns.

Value-based Adaptation

I started my MBA program this week. Did I mention I was pursuing an MBA? I am. When I chose to go back to work full-time I knew I wouldn’t be able tocomplete the extensive practicum and internship requirements to complete mycounseling degree. I set that degreeaside (of course I will complete it) and began working. Much to my surprise, I learned that mycurrent position will pay for me to receive my MBA in a program that teaches thebusiness-building skills I currentlylack. It felt like a perfect fit for asmall-business entrepreneur, personal coach. So, I’ve started the program and it feels great to be back in schoolagain.

The assignment for this week is focused on the need for anindividual to have an overall career plan and then know how to adjust, correct,and be fluidly adaptable when needed. Mytext and supporting articles all reflected my own personal views: Choose your inherent values and build uponthose. When you start with a value-basedfoundation, the details will all fall into place. Sometimes the details will surprise you andlead you somewhere you never expected, but when the values are firm the outcomewill be extraordinary.

We were asked to look at our own personal experiences and itwas a wonderful exercise to look back and see those times when I stuck to myvalues and allowed my life’s evolution in surprising and interesting ways. There were other times when I was too rigidlyfocused on what I perceived SHOULD be happening next and those moments ofstubborn rigidity resulted in paralysis, depression, frustration and needlessworry.

I will never advocate just floating in the wind and lettinglife blow you wherever it will. I don’tbelieve that will ever give you a life you’ve dreamed of. But in remembering what is most important toyou and pursuing your dreams (even when they lead down surprising roads) joyand accomplishment will be the end result. ALSO! When you begin compromisingyour personal values in order to reach a pre-determined end- we all knowMachiavelli’s mantra “the ends justify the means”- things rarely work out theway you intend and even if the path seems ideal for a moment, compromisingpersonal values will always lead to heart break and disappointment (whetherpersonal or public).

The choice to return to full-time work and set aside mycounseling degree was not easy, but as I continue progressing as a counselor(for the school I work for), a coach (for my clients), and as a businessstudent I can see how they are now working together to build a solid, dynamicfuture.

Have you ever taken the time to reflect upon your crossroadsand the decisions that have led you to where you are now (the good, the bad,and the ugly?)? I highly recommend it.

Happy Monday!

This weekend was a fantastic one and when I woke up this morning, I felt refreshed, alive and ready to go for the week. Isn't that the best feeling? I'm loving my "day job" more and more. The students I get to counsel with are smart and interesting and genuinely excited to move forward and change their life. It feels so perfectly aligned with TBL. I couldn't ask for a better fit.

Moving in has been slower than I intended. This weekend I began setting up my TBL home office. It's gorgeous and although I don't have the desk for my space, I love that my office is surrounded by windows. My goal is to have a space that invites me in to work each morning and evening- a space that reflects both my personal style and that of my business. It's moving in that direction.

Steps to Success

Writing is a craft that I love and that I yearn to hone and to perfect. In my visualized future, I make a living primarily from my writing. The problem is that I rarely do it. Like exercise, every time I take the time to do it, I love it. My joy lasts for hours following a writing session. However nonsensical it is the next time I pull out my laptop to write, I come up with excuses or alternative things to do with my time (Gossip Girl anyone?). Someone please explain to me how I can love something so much and yet come up with every excuse in the book as to why Not to do it. Actually don’t. . . I’m not sure I want to know.

Today I read THIS blog about writing 1000 words a day. It seemed simple . . . skeptically simple. How far could 1000 words a day get me? The answer: much farther than what I’m doing now. Quintessential “baby steps”! Now why didn’t I think of that? Breaking down big lofty goals into palatable bites is an obvious step- particularly to a trained and experienced life coach. What I like most about the 1000 words a day plan is that the plan doesn’t go farther than that. It’s not on Monday I will write 1000 blog words a day. Tuesday will be 1000 words towards the Luminous Living book. Wednesday is the 1000 words a day towards my personal journal. No. The 1000 words a day plan is simple and flexible and allows me the opportunity to fill those words up with whatever I see fit and whatever I need most that particular day. It’s genius!

1000 words a day works beautifully for me. What works for you? What are your goals? Nutrition? Fitness? Organization? Is there a quantifiable way to boil down your personal focus and simplify your progress? Time is wonderful way to quantify many things: Exercise, organizing your home, playing with your children. 30 minutes of exercise a day can change your life. 30 minutes of daily organizing can yield order where chaos once reigned.

Think about one area of your life that matters most, but which is currently being neglected.
Simplify that area to a single task and find a way to quantify the task. Will you do it daily? Five times a week?
Write it down. Write it down now and make a personal commitment.

Happy Tuesday!

I hope your weekend (and your Monday) was wonderful. Down here in sunny Florida my move wentseamlessly. I’m getting all settled intothe new place. Although I’m stillsurrounded by mountains of boxes, every day my place looks more and more likehome.

I was watching the news last week and all the wonderfulpeople currently out of work and searching for ways to make ends meet. A few weeks back I went out to visit garagesales to scoop up some great pieces for my place (incidentally I found agorgeous dresser that needed a quick coat of paint and is now the center pieceof my new living room). At one home, awoman led us inside and explained that she was selling anything and everythingjust to pay her utility bills. She hadripped pictures off the walls, sold televisions and anything of any value. It was heartbreaking.

I’m not sharing this to depress you just to encourage you tosit back, take a moment and feel how wonderfully you have been blessed. It took a year in the U.S. to really find myroots for my business, my financial footing with a new job, create great socialnetworks and to feel settled. I rememberthinking that a year was agonizingly long and beating myself up for taking solong to settle in. Now I realize that ayear was just right and sometimes in order for the best things to fall intoplace, it will feel frustrating and disjointed for a bit. I also know that had everything fallen intoplace too easily, I’d never feel such deep and sweet gratitude for where mylife is now.

It's My Party And I'll Cry If I Want To

I'm the luckiest girl alive! Remember the "Heidi needs a shower" idea? Well, the fantastic people in my world ran with the idea and on Friday night I came home to a party just for me.

When I walked in the door -truly disheveled and not at all party ready- a room of amazing women screamed "Surprise! This is your shower." I was shocked and thrilled and started mingling.

It really wasn't until the shock wore off that I realized how lucky I was to have incredible women who were there to say "I love you." I cried and cried . . . happy tears- grateful tears.

I never expected anything to happen with the whole "Heidi needs a shower" notion, but I'm so grateful my spunky mom and her equally spunky entourage were able to create such memorable evening. No one has ever done anything like this for me before.

I love this video. It connects the tragedy and pain of 9/11 with how each of us can adapt and change our lives so that we better live according to our true values and our hearts. Regardless of religious or spiritual beliefs, I hope each of us will take a bit of time to watch this short video and then evaluate how closely our lives emulate our true values. Are we treating our family with all the love, kindness and attention they deserve? Is our job taking away from things that matter most? Are we treating others with the respect and love they deserve? Are we looking outside ourselves and considering who else in our lives might need help or service?

I hope you had an amazing weekend. I was given the most wonderful and surprising gift. I'll tell you all about it tomorrow. It's moving week! Talk about busy.

Friday's Fancies this week is all about fashion week in New York, but I'm afraid my taste is hardly fashion forward enough to even step foot in Fashion Week. Instead I chose to dream up a lovely all-about town in an autumnal New York outfit. I love every piece I picked out. I can only imagine how buttery soft those boots must be! My little brother lives in NYC. Perhaps I'll invade his world this Fall and enjoy a taste of the Big Apple??

I got to see my new place again today-- only a few stolen moments for some quick measurements and a few "before" pictures. I didn't realize how many bright, big, beautiful windows I will have! There is nothing better than picking out place and then re-visiting weeks later only to realize you love it even more than you had thought.

I know I've been quiet. Forgive me. To be honest my life consists of day-work, clients, packing and designing. I keep thinking that I should post about the interior design for my new place, but it sounds like A LOT of effort and to do it justice, I'd need all kinds of web-skills that this little coach just doesn't have. I will take pictures. I'm headed in tomorrow to snap some "before" pics and to take some measurements. I'll absolutely be capturing the "after" pics and I hope you enjoy.

One topic on my brain has been the need for really amazing friendships. I almost wrote "for the single girl" but then decided against it because married or single, we all need amazing friends who are there no matter what. As a bit of a nomad, I tend to make strong, amazing connections and then move. In the distance I don't tend to the friendships like I ought and although my love doesn't diminish, our closeness does. And then, when times are tough, you'd hate to call them up only for the bad times and I'm sure they feel the same way. So I've been planning and thinking of ways to keep my friendships -from all through the years- stronger and increasingly mutually supportive.

I believe the key is consistency in good times and in bad. For me that means an email routine and for the phone-buddies, a call every now and then. A few of my friends and I have regular phone dates. It doesn't matter if something is big or if nothing is going on . . . we chat and catch up. Sometimes it's a five minute chat and sometimes the chat is a marathon call (like my hour and 25 minute talk on Monday). But the important part is keeping the lines of communication open so we can support each other and meet one another's needs.

I solemnly swear to be a better friend. Text me right now and we'll set up a call! I promise. I also promise to get better with this blogging thing again. I miss you.

I love starting Mondays with a good kick-in-the-pants quote! I know it's more like the end of a Monday, but it never hurts to have a dose of inspiration. I need inspiration to work all day, pack up my place, and then coach at night! All my tasks are exciting on some level, but it's still a chore to push myself a little bit further than I want to go each day.

How was your weekend? Were you knee-deep in linens, towels, pots and pans like I was? Probably not.

I've realized something: I've never been married and consequently I've never had a bridal shower. You know the shower where everyone stocks your kitchen with everything you could ever want? And then, at the reception you get the rest and more? Well, at what point does a grown woman get her own shower? I could really use one right now. I threw out all my old stuff before going to Prague and now I have very little kitchen gear. My mom wants to throw a party called, "Heidi needs a shower." I love the concept, hate the name. I doubt anyone in my world is audacious enough to throw me a shower and I am finding some great sale items but how wonderful it would be to go create my own registry at my beloved Target!

Let the record show, that I spent days building a perfect dream, distance wedding for myself but I couldn't quite get it together in time to share. Maybe later . . . One thing I can share is that when I'm married, I either want a sparkly "mocktail" party with lots of people coming and going and very little formality or an intimate delicious and gorgeous dinner with only the closest friends and family. I decided to focus on the cocktail party wedding guest with my Friday's Fancies wedding themed post today. I love this outfit. I love anything silky and feminine. Add some sparkle and I'm eating it with a spoon!

On to other stuff . . . I found my apartment! I'm so happy. It's in a different part of town than I'd expected to live in, but I still only have a fifteen minute commute to the day job and I'll have a gorgeous home office for TBL! I loved the place as soon as I walked in. I can't wait to decorate it and give it a "Heidi" stamp.

Other big news? There is NO FOOD around my office, so at least once a week we rely on delivery. I found an Indian restaurant in downtown that delivers! Yay! This discovery was almost as exciting as was my new apartment.

Off to a great weekend of packing, sorting, and purging. Have a great one.

Shhhhhhh: Don't Tell

I have a problem . . . . an infomercial problem. I am susceptible to infomercials. I am mocked for it. In my defense, my purchases have ALWAYS been wise. Tony Robbins? Who doesn't want more "personal power"? Windsor Pilates? I'm sure it would work miracles if I used it. Bare Minerals? Brilliant! It was my go-to foundation for years. Now I'm trying the Wen hair care system.

I love my blonde locks, but alas, they aren't nearly as healthy as my natural brunette ones. I went to the beauty supply shop to buy my fancy shampoo and conditioner that would make my hair as vibrant and healthy as it once was and when I saw the price tag a light bulb went off in my brain! Wen! I've always wanted to try it and now it is actually more affordable than my salon alternative. I happily skipped home, opened my laptop and went to ordering.

Most of the reviews rave about the product, but hate the membership it comes with. I navigated the Bare Minerals membership well, so I'm hoping to do the same with Wen.

I've been tracking my package through FedEx and it should arrive any day now. I'll let you know how it goes.

It's Never Too Late

I had this engraved on a bookmark at one time. It was one of the few bookmarks that I kept for years and years. I love this quote. The world tells us that we're too old, too chubby, not smart enough, too smart, too short, too tall, too dark, too pale. It doesn't matter who you are, at some point someone else has sized you up, stamped a label on you and thrown you aside. But more and more I'm understanding how eternal we really are and how many options we have in front of us. It just isn't too late.

It isn't too late to go to school. It isn't too late to write the book you've dreamed of. It isn't too late to tell someone you love them. It isn't too late to lose the insecurity and embrace your beauty.

Is there anything in life you've been putting off and simultaneously looking at and saying "it's too late . . "? Well, pick it back up again, take a long hard look and just start working on it. It's never too late.

Balance

I loved the balance beam on my playgrounds growing up. I loved balancing at the ballet barre. I'd carefully hit my position, one hand lightly touching the barre. I always wrinkled my forehead up (my tell that I'm concentrating completely). I'd wobble in every direction and then pull my muscles together in just the right way and hit it. From the moment I hit it, I could hold my position for a ridiculously long time. Some of my classmates would pull up into the position without any pre-wobblage. I was jealous. You see, it took me quite a while to find my balance.

I should have known I'd be the same way as a grown up.

It's not that I can't find my balance. I can. I always do. I'm just not the girl who pulls into a difficult position with such ease that everyone is left wondering "how does she do that?". I wobble, I wiggle, I half fall and then I get back up. One moment, just as anyone watching might think I'm about to tumble to the ground, I pull up and everything comes together.

You all know I recently started a job, a job that my talents are perfectly suited for. And still, as I got started, the wobbling began. My time management felt shaken up. My talents felt obscured. Everything felt good, but foggy and not at all "on" like I had hoped. And then one day I remembered the way I balanced at a ballet barre. I remembered the way I adjusted at college (it took awhile and then I was fine). I remembered my time in Bulgaria and in Prague, both requiring significant readjustment. I remembered that so many of the times in my life that I treasure and now consider the best moments, all started a bit wobbly. Instantly I knew I needed to give myself permission to wobble and I had perfect faith in my ability to pull it all together and be balanced. A week later (this week) I did it. I found my balance. I believe allowing myself to wobble without losing faith in the end expedited the balance. . . . it's just a theory.

My point is this: The wobbles are normal. They are part of the process. Just never forget that the balance will come.

I know, it's a little crowded up there, but I happen to be madly in love with school supplies and this is the one time I get to share it! Let's face it: school starts when it's still HOT. Keeping that in mind, I have a cap sleeve blouse and open-toed sandals. HOWEVER, as a nod to the bitter cold Florida A/C. I also have a delicious fall-inspired back to school jacket.

Are you ready for the weekend? I am. Oh how I am! I have more apartment shopping in store. I have honed in on my desired location and am ready to dig deep . . .

Coaching has been fantastic. I love my clients like crazy. I'm in the process of narrowing my working hours and attempting to keep all my clients while creating a schedule that gives me some sanity. I'm working in my blogging time and workout time now. I've got my personal study, my coaching hours, and my day job hours all down pat! New schedules feel so chaotic sometimes, but I love knowing that from the chaos, a steady strong routine will be formed.

Practice Hope

There is a dangerous attitude out there that we are either born an optimist or a pessimist. "I'm a glass is half full kinda girl." Statements like these are meant to sum us up, but they give weight to the notion that we are either born a pessimist (or a realist as many say) or an optimist. I challenge that notion. I believe we can choose. We can choose to see the positives in any given day. When someone asks you, "How'd your day go?" What is your response? Think of yesterday specifically and respond to the question.

What did your response look like? Did you list all the bad things that happened? Did you list the unique things that happened? Did you list the great things that happened? Did you list the little things that make you smile?

What would you LIKE your list to look like? For example, I might have listed a frustrating exchange with a friend, excitement over a particular new student I'm working with, and frustration over my apartment search.
What I would LIKE my list to look like is: joy of a new student I'm working with, excitement that my parents had their 36the wedding anniversary, and a resolve to do something a little better . . .

When we answer that question, we are illustrating our natural tendencies. I'm an optimist with a dose of depressing drama now and then. I'd rather not have the dose of depressing drama. When looking back over my days and my life I'd like to choose to see the beautiful, the hopeful, the vibrant. Training your eyes to see the good in each day and each moment will build greater hope in the future.

Let's have a beautiful day and let it lead to a hopeful tomorrow!

Happy Friday!

First off let me apologize for sporadic blogging practices. There is no excuse! But if you're interested . . . .I'm still working out the kinks in my schedule surrounding the new job. Clients, Personal Study, Blogging, Workouts . . . everything is being carefully and mindfully balanced. Blogging has taken a beating, but not for long!

I'm kicking off this weekend with a girls night at The Help. Did you all read the book??? AMAZING! If you haven't yet, then you need to read it. I thought an ultra proper, pretty Friday's Fancy outfit would do the trick for our movie viewing pleasure.

Other exciting weekend plans include house hunting for my new Tampa place! I'm so excited. I'm still renting, but it will be fun to find a place closer to work and with all those lovely details I love. The question is always whether to go old or to go new. We are officially in the dog days of summer and although I know I can't complain (Texas and a few other states have it much, much worse) I don't want to wear anymore clothes than I have to these days. Kate Middleton is amazing. (My saying this has nothing to do with the tail end of the Lifetime movie about William and Kate I ~~watched~~ recorded the other night.) I love that she is single handedly bringing sleeves and knee-length skirts/dresses back in fashion. I love that she shows all of us how to let the clothes accentuate who we ARE and not the other way around. Her beauty looks natural and effortless, not in the least bit contrived. This weekend is all about the word RELAXATION. I’m finishing up my third week of my new job and am well into the swing of things. I love it as much as ever, but find a new need for rejuvenating weekends. And isn’t that the hard part? It’s tricky to walk that fine line between relaxing, getting things done, and have a dang good time! For the most part I feel like the most blessed girl on the planet and I want to pinch myself that somehow I have a full-time work situation than only enhances my career dreams and that helps to build my sweet coaching practice and business.

Dance Your Way Through Life

Dancers make it look effortless. In fact, the goal is to make it look effortless. Dancers train at least five physically demanding hours a day so that their performances can appear "effortless". If you watch a dancer and you can see how hard it is for them, then they haven't done it well enough. The same can be said of a golfer or a soccer player. Whatever the physical activity, when performed beautifully, it looks almost effortless and absolutely natural.

A beautiful life is the same way.

We see those people who appear to waltz in and out of life and the stickiest situations with barely a drop of sweat. Aren't they amazing? What we don't see are the hours of training, of planning, of practicing and of implementing growth. When we see a perfect body at the gym we don't see the temptations they've had to push away or the time they've had to carve out to care for the body. When we read a perfect novel, we can't see the hours and tears spent writing and re-writing.

Our lives are just as gorgeous, but we see all the background work. We see the messy knots and the fumbling mistakes. We see the starts and the restarts and then more of the restarts. But that's okay. No one lives without the fumbles, the starts and restarts. The key is to get up and keep moving. The key is to smile and continue. We've got to continue applying the techniques we've learned over the years. We've got to continue training, learning, accepting new ideas and applying them. We have to continue pushing and perfecting. Even though we might feel like a mess, it's in the struggle that the beautiful emerges. It's only after the struggle that we will ever appear to live effortlessly. Isn't that ironic?

You never know when someone is looking at you and wondering how you got it all together. It just might be that moment when you most feel like you're ready to fall apart. Today, whether you're feeling light as a feather or heavy and fumbling, just remember that you're creating your own masterpiece.

Have you all seen Midnight in Paris? If not RUN to the film. It's incredible. I saw it a few weeks ago and danced on air all evening- one of the best movies I've seen in a long, long time. Sunny Yellow & Values

Isn't this yellow fabric bright and sunny? I love it! It perfectly suits my mood this morning and sets a vibrant tone for the day. What does this yellow have to do with values? Very little . . .

In my training at the new job, we participated in a value exercise that I loved! The new school I work for is a Catholic University and it prides itself on six core values. I've worked for many companies and typically on the first day, you read the mission statement and the values. End of story. Maybe, just maybe the company will go back to the values now and again in a basic training. I was shocked to spend two days in a classroom learning the tangible ways of integrating the school values with my every day job. I learned how to use the value of integrity with my students, my colleagues and in the community. This was no surface-level integration. We were posed specific challenging situations and asked to decide now how we will show integrity when they happen. We studied shades of meaning of each of the values and were responsible for integrating the nuances into our daily work environment. For example integrity doesn't just mean honesty, it means representing yourself authentically and being consistent in word, belief and action. It's possible that by acting shy and scared and hiding in my office, I could be out of my own integrity and not true to who I really am. Interesting, no? I found this exercise wildly thought provoking, tricky and awesome!

This past weekend I defined my own values again and reevaluated how I am doing in the little day to day details of living them. One of my values is Divinity. I believe each person is a child of God. With that value in mind I began looking at the way I interact with people. Was I consistent in treating each person (and myself) like valuable child of God? I then continued through each of my values. You can do this with any of your values!

I can't recommend this exercise any more highly. It's a fantastic way to reevaluate what you believe and to see how well you are integrating your beliefs and values into the nitty gritty daily details. Try it and let me know how it goes!

We're having a Luau at work today and I'm instructed to dress accordingly. This isn't what I'll be wearing given the "no bathing suit" clause, but to me both summer casual and days in Hawaii mean a light flowy dress that keeps you covered and cool at the same time. Add some timeless flip flops, a bag to carry my stuff and a bathing suit for those beach-esque emergencies and I think you're pretty much covered!

This weekend I have lots of fun plans. Harry Potter is a "must see" tonight. I reserved my tickets awhile ago because I'm that geeky girl that pre-ordered the books and cancelled all plans for the weekend in order to finish it. I also see the movies on opening day. I just do. One movie (maybe #3?) I actually used my very valid doctor's appointment as an excuse to leave the office early and just happened to hit an uncrowded afternoon matinee on opening day. Genius!

One of my favorite friends is having a birthday, so I'll be playing with her and trying out a new hot yoga class! This isn't bikram yoga, the class is a regular yoga class but in a 95 degree room. I'll let you know how it goes.

I had a student sitting in front of me about three weeks ago. He wanted to know all about what I do and what my background is. When I explained that I was a personal coach he looked at me and said, "How does a 25 year old girl coach anyone? Who are you to coach?" For the record, I LOVED that he thought I was 25, but then thought for a minute more about his question before answering. Why do I coach? What makes me uniquely qualified? Intriguing question, no?

Here's my take on it: I've always been able to see lots of sides to things. In fact, I'd make a horrible lawyer because I would understand and support the opposing arguments (to the detriment of my client). I loved studying humanities because I had the opportunity to view art through various perspectives. This is one of the crucial skills needed to be an effective coach. Great coaching isn't about making everyone do things your way. Great coaching is about learning the mind, heart and desires of a person and helping facilitate their own answers. Great coaching means stepping into someone else's shoes and helping them know how to best help themselves.

Another reason I'm a coach is because it comes naturally. Just as a brilliant mathematician can see a problem and solve it out in their head, I can hear the life of an individual and see very clearly what is working, what isn't and what can be done to change things. (The tricky part is not TELLING them what I see and helping them discover it on their own).

I love people. I find my own sense of satisfaction from helping others. When you add to all that a heaping of education in both coaching and counseling, the end result is an effective coach (no matter what my age is).

I believe we all have callings in life and our careers can be a huge part of our callings. For whatever reason, and no matter how imperfect I am, I have the chance to help motivate, guide and support people as they create the life of their dreams.

I wouldn't have it any other way!

Thank you for patiently waiting while I stole some of my own days. They were delicious! And I have news . . .

After a year of debate, careful consideration, slews of prayer and a great deal of searching I finally found exactly what I was looking for.

A year ago (has it REALLY been that long?) when I returned home from Prague, I had a business plan and a very careful vision for To Be Luminous. This vision included a great deal of writing -for my blog, for a few books, and for magazines. The vision included dynamic group workshops where participants would experience explosive growth and palpable shared energy. I could clearly see my business 5-10 years from now and it was gloriously compelling. With this inspired and detailed picture of my perfect practice in my mind I moved home and set to work.

As the reality of the US dollar sunk in, I realized that by gathering more clients I could pay more and more bills. I knew that my vision for my business didn't include a slew of one on one clients, but I also saw how profitable a large client base could be. I put out my feelers and found a group of incredible people to work with. I was thrilled! Over the moon! I was coaching so many clients -amazing clients- and building my beautiful business. I wasn't writing so often and I had stopped designing my workshops, but I was coaching. I'm a coach, right? Everything was in place.

Or was it?

The burn out factor for coaching so many clients caught me off guard. In my counseling degree, we often talked about "burn out", but coaching is so positive, so uplifting and empowering surely it wouldn't be a factor for me. My practice wasn't nearly as full as many incredible coaches' practices- how could I experience burn out? What was happening?

I took a step back and realized that I had stepped away from my inspired vision in order to make money.

Yes, I was doing what I loved, but I was pursuing the less-than-perfect path for Heidi and the result was feeling tired, burned out, a little crusty around the edges, etc. You know what I'm talking about, right? We've all been there. Everyone in my life had well-intended advice about what I needed to do. It ranged from practical business advice like re-writing my business plan or taking a branding course to personal advice which included getting a man, using a spreadsheet, and even moving to a new city. I listened and listened and like every stubborn girl began to get mad.

How did everyone else know what I needed to do and me, the personal life coach, didn't seem to know?

This past spring, I stumbled across an old journal that detailed my clear vision for TBL and the focus on writing and workshops. I began dedicating myself to writing my first book. The first day I wrote a flood of energy filled me. My joy was radiant. The words poured out of me. I knew I was on the right path. But it would take time for these words to effect my bottom line. How would I provide for myself while writing? More clients! My mind immediately decided to find more clients and push myself to coach all day. It makes sense. Coaching can provide a fantastic living and it's something I'm trained in. Coaching is an activity that I love. Shouldn't I want to do it all the time? I considered a Groupon special to immediately fill up my practice from top to bottom with clients. I considered expanding my bridal coaching (which I LOVE) by marketing myself to wedding planners and bridal boutiques. I had a ton of wonderful practical ideas, but none of them seemed to stick and none of them inspired me. None of them felt the way that sitting down to write felt. When I considered the thought of coaching all day every day, I didn't feel energized. I felt exhausted. I was ashamed. What kind of a coach doesn't want a thriving practice of forty clients?

I knew a few things: 1. the future of my business was in writing, speaking and teaching 2. I love coaching clients 3. Coaching too much results in less writing and more stress.

So, what were my options? How could I continue to write and build my business authentically but still make a living? With an absolute certainty I knew I needed to scale back the number of my clients, to focus daily on my writing and workshop development, and to find a full-time job that would support me both personally and financially.

Looking for a full-time job was daunting. This isn't a job-rich economy. I tried to remain open to every possible option, but while looking through the help wanted ads just kept thinking "no, no, no, no". It was frustrating! Everyone had an opinion on my job search too. With more unsolicited advice than this girl could handle and a ton of inner direction, I continued looking and looking and looking. Each day my resolve grew stronger. I knew that the right full-time job was needed and I knew exactly what it took to find it (I work with a lot of career transition clients) but it wasn't surfacing as quickly or as easily as I had hoped.

One day I looked on Craigslist and just decided to go for it. I decided that I would pursue everything with wild abandon and see what bubbled up. Receptionist at an old folks home? Why not? I was there filling out an application with thirty other women all wanting to make $10 an hour. Office manager at a furniture warehouse? Why not? I began searching online for anything even remotely interesting and began applying. I didn't get a call back from the receptionist job, but something shifted and within days of my gung-ho approach slews of potential, substantial and professional jobs showed up in my life. it was like God was waiting to see how much I really wanted it. When he saw that I was willing to put in some elbow grease, he was ready to reward.

I began to apply to positions that would allow me to counsel, coach, and guide others while receiving all kinds of benefits. I wanted to pinch myself! I knew I was close. I sent away resumes and cover letters systematically -dutifully dedicating myself to two hours a day of job searching. I kept coaching and working my part-time position. I networked and spoke with close friends. I followed everything I knew to do when it comes to a job search. Within a few weeks, I began receiving calls from recruiters. I found myself moving through the interview process with multiple companies. I began learning about differing benefits, schedules, work environments and weighing the pros and cons.

Finally, I found an opportunity that seemed too good to be true. The university was established and reputable -a traditional school with a value-based core. The office was so close and in a beautiful location. The schedule was perfect and would allow me to coach, to dance, to write, to volunteer and to study. I began interviewing and met some of the most impressive, down-to-earth individuals. Every step felt right. When I received the job offer I was elated.

I did what every luminous girl needs to do when hitting a milestone: I took a break. I had a week and a half all to myself. I worked with a handful of my clients. I didn't blog (sorry) and I didn't worry about writing. I enjoyed my days in the sun, with my dog, watching funny movies, reading books and taking long naps. I took a week or so as my own. I don't regret it. I believe we all need to carefully steal some time for ourselves now and then.

I started my full-time job yesterday. I came home energized, exuberant and ready to blog, to coach and to dance. Who knew that an eight hour work day could render me even more productive in the other areas of my life?

The message is this: you ultimately know what is best for yourself. Taking time to consider the advice of others is important, but follow your gut and your personal vision. In time, it will always serve you well. AND stealing time to relax, live and enjoy is luxurious and rewarding. Don't forget it!

The best news? I've found the sweet spot in my coaching practice and know how many clients I can coach with passion and energy.. I have room for a few more and I'm so energized and ready. Happy Long Weekend! It's raining here and there's no end in sight. My fourth will be spent trying to squeeze in the beach before the storms hit followed up by an indoor BBQ. Still sounds great to me! Today's my little sister's birthday and by "little" I mean that she's a thirty-something mother of three. When I look for examples of who I want to be and what I'd like to become I only have to look around my own family to find them. I was so blessed to have my family. Does everyone feel this way? My sister is a big part of that.

Growing up we moved a lot. Recently I found my journal from 1986. I was nine. A nine year old's perspective says so much. One thing I found surprising was how much I talked about my sister and what we'd do and where we'd play. I was often as concerned about her feelings and her day as much as I was my own. My own happiness and my own experiences were so tied up with my sister and yet in almost every way we are complete opposites.

I embrace my emotions and she is proud of remaining stoic. She likes to be quietly rebellious. I quietly live to please. She lives in jeans and t-shirts. I love skirts and dresses. I love to spill my every thought. She carefully weighs every word she says.

I'm so grateful to have had a sister to grow up with. I'm so grateful to have a sister that I look up to.

I think every girl in the world should have a sister.

There is a universal law that says "what you focus on expands". If you focus on all that you lack, your empty lack will grow bigger. If you focus on all that you have (and especially your gratitude) that abundance will grow too. We have the option of choosing our focus every day and that choice is what can determine who we become, where we are going, and how fantastic we feel about the direction we are going in.

It's no secret that we don't live in isolated bubbles and that we are blessed to have lives intertwined with family members, friends, co-workers, neighbors, etc. Sometimes we choose the people around us. Sometimes we don't. Sometimes we love the people around us. Sometimes they drive us crazy. In mulling this all over a phrase came to my mind, "Cease to find fault with one another." This was initially told to the Mormon Pioneers by their leader and prophet Joseph Smith. I can't begin to imagine what it would be like to push or pull everything I own in a cart or a wagon across the entire nation. Just the combination of heat, hunger, and exhaustion could give birth to all kinds of annoyances, criticisms and downright brawls. I was also reminded me of my parents telling me to "stop worrying about your brother or sister; Just worry about yourself." And then my thoughts continued back to a conversation with a friend who essentially shredded her own family, one by one, for their "obvious" faults. My first response was horror and a desire to hide under a rock and exit the conversation. My second response was to wonder whether or not she ever talked to anyone like that about me. My third and most appropriate response was to ask myself whether or not I do the same thing from time to time. Unfortunately, I knew I did -maybe not that harshly, but I knew that in some way or another, I did.

I talked this concept over with many people over the last few weeks discussing methods and means of venting -to whom and under what circumstances. If someone doesn't know the other person, does it make it okay? If someone loves the subject in question as much as you do, can you speak openly and frankly about your criticism and frustrations? Where are the lines? When do you draw them? How do you know when you can criticize (even out of love) and critique or just vent or complain?

The answer? "Cease to find fault one with another." This was my answer and it felt like such a revelation! Stop looking for things that are wrong with others -even if their faults seems to leap out and smack you. Just change your focus. It sounds simpler than it is. I know because I've been trying to do this. For every negative thought or critical thought (no matter how well-intentioned) I've been trying to list five wonderful things about the person and focus on those instead. If I choose to not find fault with someone and to focus on their positive qualities then I don't have to worry about who to vent to, whether or not a person will ever find out and how I will choose my words. I will also have much less negative emotion in my head and in my heart and all that fantastic energy can be freed for other more uplifting activities.

So what are some practical ways to quell the critic we all have?

Express the feelings to yourself out loud or on paper. Ask yourself if they merit a conversation. Has this person wronged you? Is there a repeated pattern of abuse or ill behavior? Does something need to be rectified? If yes, then calmly and lovingly approach the individual and have the needed discussion. Usually the answer is no. Usually someone has just been annoying or they have overstepped their bounds. Sometimes a conversation won't solve the problem. In this case it's better to process the irritation or flaw that you see and move forward. By processing I recommend writing it out or saying it (like I mentioned above) and then shifting your focus to five fantastic things about this person. Write them out. Say them out loud. Whatever you need to do to shift your focus and as often as you need to, just do it.

Don't engage in these conversations at all. Pull yourself out of the gossip loop. Become the person that your loved ones trust. No one wants to feel that someone in their life bashes them behind their back. And even if you think it's good criticism, very rarely will the person you are speaking about feel that way too.

When it all boils down to it, we have plenty of faults. Every single one of us is flawed enough. The people around me could have a list a mile long of what I've done wrong, what I could do better, mistakes I've made . . . I'm sure the people around you could do the same thing. (Sorry if I'm bursting anyone's bubble here). The key is to choose to focus on how fantastic each person is and to let all the stuff they are working on fall away. Everyone, no matter how seemingly confident or braggy, is acutely aware of their faults and defects. We don't need to be the one to tell them and we don't need to be the one to point them out to everyone else.

I know that this is such an important shift I need to make in my life. I hope it's not one you have to make, but if you do, let's make it together! Let's become the people who lift others up and make them feels special -no matter how many weaknesses they might have. Remember that what you focus on expands and choosing to focus on the yucky in the people and the world around you, will only expand the yucky in your life. Yes, yucky is a technical term. So I choose to see the fantastic, the beautiful and the uplifting. Who's with me?

Visual Motivation

Having already proclaimed my love for Pinterest and having used many images on this blog, I thought I'd share with you a motivation trick. We all are stimulated to act in a variety of ways. You should know best what actually motivates you. Personally music and images get me going. If I'm ready to slough the workout, then some good upbeat music and a few pictures of ideal bodies are usually enough to get me up and off the couch (even if just for a little bit). Visual motivation can lead to clear visions of where you are going and who you want to be.

On Pinterest I've been keeping a Luminous Loves pinboard where I put pictures that enchant, delight or in someway move and express a part of me. Every once in awhile I go back and look at the entire board to see what I've got. It truly has become a visual expression of who I am inside. I'm not talented with a paint brush and can barely squeeze by with a camera, but Pinterest allows me to collect those images that say something. When I look at it I'm reminded of who I am and where I am going. I'm reminded of my goals and how excited I am to get there.

How can you use it? Well, that's up to you. If you have a goal, a dream, a vision or a way of being that excites you or invites you to pursue it, I'd recommend starting a Pinterest board to inspire you. When you feel funky or dull or not wanting to move forward, pop on, spend some time with your board and come up with your next action step.

What I Learned from Watching Bentley Williams

Bentley Williams made quite the splash on the Bachelorette this season- before he even stepped out of the car to meet Ashley H. Love him or hate him he’s made an indelible impression. Bentley currently lives in Salt Lake City, UT but is originally from Tampa, FL. Our families have known each other for years and although not personally acquainted with him, we in the Slovacek house have been looking to see the great qualities we know come along with being part of the Williams family instead of running with the dark, villain ABC is portraying. It’s exactly this willingness to step back and examine Bentley’s words, actions and behavior with the other cast members that helped me stumble across something pretty phenomenal.

Theories of Bentley’s behavior amongst my friends range from “Bentley’s words were spliced up by crafty editors and producers to create a fictional demonic character” to “maybe after the show was filmed, they called him back and paid him loads of money to do evil-villain voice overs that make his every move appear conniving and awful.” I don’t know that we’ll ever know how much of the bad behavior was Bentley’s true self and how much of it was a producer manipulating the emotions of a vulnerable Bachelorette and one of her Bachelors to create compelling television.

Here’s my epiphany: If you mute the show and watch how Bentley behaves in every situation, you’ll be amazed at the laughter, kindness, tenderness and sincerity he shows. Only through the voice-overs and talking heads do we see signs of duplicity. This got me thinking about my own life and what someone might see if they muted my words and my writing. If an outsider just watched my actions each day, would he get a clear sense of who I am, where my values are, and what is most important to me?

Walking my dog this morning, I played my out yesterday in my mind. Were there any actions, behaviors or expressive gestures that contradicted the way I want to live my life? Immediately I thought about being over at my friends’ home and texting another friend while deep in a conversation. I LOVE my friends and I love being with them. They must know this, but how rude am I to be texting while talking to them? Did that action show love? I’m thinking it didn’t. Maybe it seems small, but it’s something worth correcting, non?

If I am excited to lose weight would someone know it by my exercise and eating patterns? If I want to lose weight but then feast on fast food, there is a problem. If I proclaim myself a loving person, would someone know it by the way I treat and serve the people around me? If I say I am loving, but blow a friend off when she needs me, there is a problem. If I say that more than anything I want to graduate from school, would my actions support that? If I claim graduation from college is my number one goal and I never crack a book, there is a problem.

(These are all fictional examples)

Try it today! Write down your top three goals and then play your day back to yourself without any sound. Do you actions support your goals? Do your actions speak to who you REALLY are? What can you learn from your actions and what do you need to change? What are you proud of and would like to see more of?

Emerson said, “What you do speaks so loud that I cannot hear what you say.”

Perhaps it’s high time that this coach starts really paying attention to my life without the voice overs, the excuses in my mind, or without glossing past the less than perfect parts of me. At least once in awhile it’s a great way to see myself clearly.

I'm sorry I've been AWOL this week. I've had a good excuse. It's called the stomach flu and this wasn't the "ooh I feel a bit of nausea" variety. It was more of the "death would be better than enduring this" variety. I'll spare you the gorier details. If you want some gore you can read my sisters version of what happened at her house HERE. Mine was similar, minus the small children, so I'll consider myself blessed. But it's been hard and I've been away from blogging (and other duties). I'm sorry.

This morning while out walking Harry the school bus that passes me every morning pulled over. The driver, a sweet man with a huge smile, opened his bus doors. I thought he wanted directions and was surprised that he'd need them. I was talking to a neighbor and she looked startled too. I approached the doors and he asked me, "what's his name?" I must have looked at him blankly because he explained further, "I see you walking him every day. What's his name?" I softened and smiled and said, "Harry." His reply was simple, "He's so cute. Have a great day!"

The act was simple enough, but what this man didn't know was that since Tuesday night around 10 or 11 pm I'd been in pain. I was sick and so, so, so tired from not sleeping. To add insult to injury I started a very emotional and painful period. The sweet bus driver didn't know that I felt overlooked and insignificant. He didn't know that a poignant krumper on So You Think You Can Dance had brought me to tears (an obvious illustration of my ridiculously high-emotions). He didn't know that what I needed most this morning was to be noticed and to be loved. Anyone who has a dog knows that one of the fastest ways to someone's heart is to love his or her dog. He was busy, obviously on a schedule and with a bus full of kids but in spite of his busyness he stopped to notice me and Harry. My neighbor (a school teacher) turned to me as he drove away and said, "That says so much about how that man does his job."

That, my friends, was luminous! I don't know if he felt prompted or nudged. All I know is that in his own busy world, he noticed a girl walking a fuzzy white dog and on the most perfect day possible, he stopped his life for 30 seconds to make her feel special.

I hope your Memorial Day has been that perfect combo of playful relaxation. I had the chance to eat amazing food, hang with family and lifelong friends, play with new friends, canoe down a gator infested river, and soak up the sun from my backyard pool. So perfect really!

After living in multiple post-communist countries, the reality of the freedom our incredible servicemen has provided with us stays with me. Freedom isn't just about being able to vote (although that's a precious gift we need to exercise). Freedom, true freedom, starts with our thoughts and the way we approach the world. As Americans (and now many other cultures and countries can join us) we are free to not only be whoever we want to be, but we are free to dream, free to pursue our dreams. We are free to make the most of every opportunity put in front of us.

Every Memorial Day I'm incredibly grateful to those who have sacrificed their lives for my freedom. I also like to do a little spot check. How well am I using my own freedoms? How well am I taking advantage of the opportunities put in front of me? How many new opportunities am I creating in my life? Am I giving back?

I was a little late to the "imma" game. It wasn't until I tried to master the words to Ke$ha's "Tik Tok" that I realized the clever little combo "imma" existed. It's it supposed to be capitalized? I'm not sure the grammatical intricacies of "imma/Imma".

I've shared this before, but in Spring 2010 I took the online course Mondo Beyondo and stumbled across quite the personal epiphany:

I want to BE someone and not just DO a lot of things. I'm far more interested in being my best self, than simply doing lots o' stuff.

And here's the thing: My clients are seriously impressive people. Every single one of them in their own right. The list of their accomplishments never ceases to amaze me. More than once I've thought, "how am I going to help someone as incredible as (insert name of amazing client)?" And then we work together and beautiful things happen.

My clients continue to accomplish lots of great stuff, just as I'm anxiously working on my own life "to do" list. But I mostly enjoy watching them evolve as people, learning things about themselves, strengthening their relationships. With every epiphany they experience, I have one of my very own. I learn from everyone and am inspired every day. So sometimes when my "to do" list feels slow . . . I love to look back at who I am and am proud of the work-in-progress that I am.

Today, step away from your "to do" list and look at who you are at the core. Aren't you already amazing? Yep. I thought so.

Ask A Coach: What Makes A Good Coach?

I have thought about coaching for a long time, but just don't know if I have what it takes. What do you think makes a good coach?

Ooooh. Great question! I think there are a lot of different qualities needed to be a great coach and then of course everyone's definition of a great coach will differ. But here are a few traits I think are essential to being a great coach:

The ability to see through anyone's eyes! We've been coached by athletic coaches or at least we've seen them on T.V. They yell and scream, intimidate and threaten. But a truly fantastic coach -both on and off the field- take the time to see through the eyes of the client or the player and hone in on what will motivate them and inspire them. Lots of organized, driven individuals would like to coach, but unless they are coaching someone cut out of the same cloth, their efforts will feel futile and won't yield many results. A good coach looks to understand first and then to guide, motivate, inspire and occasionally threaten.
Love of trial and error! Every client is unique and comes with their own bundle of talents, insecurities, past experiences and obstacles. There is no "one size fits all" when it comes to coaching. This means that both the client and the coach need to be flexible enough to try out different activities and monitor the results. Keep doing more of what works and chalk up what doesn't work to experience.
Passion for helping others be their best! A coach doesn't take credit when a client succeeds because they know whatever part they played in the success was minimal compared to the consistency, the effort, and the vision of the client.

If you are one of those driven, fabulous people that wants to create mini-mold of you, then the best role for you is consulting! If you want to boil down to the core of a person and help them learn to inspire, discipline and create a great vision of themselves, then coaching might be right up your alley.

I have been such a Kate Spade fan for years! Naturally her bright and classic bags turned my head initially, but it's her story that has since drawn me in. I love everything about it. I love how she slept on a couch and temped her way into a position at a fashion mag. I love that she dreamed up her bags and set to work in getting them made. I love that she injects her fabulous style into everything she touches and now her company and her brand is synonymous with bright, playful, classic and feminine. It's all so perfect, too perfect really.

I reread Kate's story after reading THIS blog post from Jen on her ever-so stylish blog MadeByGirl. Naturally I had to immediately pin at least one of her shots. Thank you Jen for capturing and conveying your time there. I love to be inspired by stylish, driven, and unique women. Isn't it refreshing to know we can be successful as ourselves and not as a random suit-wearing automaton?

I was so inspired by Jess' post yesterday on MML. Read it here. I know that living your life to its fullest and to its most magical and ultimately being the driving force behind it is what makes all the difference. It is what makes someone "luminous" and someone else merely "sparkly". (These are of course my professional terms.)

Ask A Coach: Inspiring Reads

Heidi, what books have you been reading lately that have inspired you?

I ALWAYS get this question and I love it, but my answer might surprise you. The truth is that I don't read all that much "success" literature. I find most of it rather shallow and a little slick. Is that awful for a coach to admit? I'm not saying there isn't good to be found there and there are a few books I recommend for anyone. One of those is 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. I firmly believe that if we embrace and fully hone the ability to be proactive in our lives, our worlds will turn upside down in amazing ways. It's a quality and a way of being that I'm always pushing myself to grow in. So, that's a great read.

But the book that I am reading now, and am finding totally inspiring is Heidi. Yes, that's right- my namesake children's book written by Johanna Spyri. I realized that for most of my life I've had a copy of it on my shelf but have never actually read it. Heidi is such a fantastic character. I am inspired by her unaffected ways -her lack of pretension and her deep-rooted concern for others. She authentic and darling- a darling example of a luminous woman-to-be

So there's my answer: a children's book. Are you disappointed?

Some Things Never Change

I'm super proud of the fact that I never wrecked one of my parents' cars. My other siblings can't say the same. HOWEVER, I was never good a backing out of a garage, or going into one. Over the course of my first few years driving the side mirrors and the sides of the garage had a way of finding one another. They must have been in love. One sad night the entire mirror came off. My dad came out to see what all the noise was and saw the mirror on the ground. He scooped it up and walked back into the house muttering "I love my daughter. I love my daughter." I was the oldest and to him it was awful. If only he had known the types of accidents the other three would be in! Then he might have smiled, chuckled and laughed off the minor mirror damage.

Today, once again pulling out of my parents' garage, I scraped my mirror on the side of the garage door. You can see the cream paint on my black mirror in the picture. Sigh. A zillion years later and I'm still making the same driving mistakes. I guess some things never change.

Pinterest: What Better Way to Discover Personal Style?

Although I spend most of my time talking about personal development (primarily internal development) I believe how we dress ourselves and our lives says soooo much about us. It's an opportunity to tell the world who we are. Our clothing should be as authentic and expressive as we are.

While working with many of my clients the issue of personal style has surfaced and a wonderful place to start understanding your style is by collecting images that jump out at you: beautiful art, photography, outfits, homes, cars, parks, landscaping. There are no wrong answers here- it's all about beginning to understand what visually expresses who you are inside.

The Old School approach is to take scissors to some old magazines and begin cutting out anything that catches your eye: quotes, photos, clothing, etc. Lately I've been loving Pinterest as a style-finding tool. It allows you to tag interesting photos from anyone online and categorize them. Simply grabbing what is gorgeous to you and seeing them all together can be an eye-opening experience.

The first time I took interest in my personal style was my junior year in college. I began working in retail at the mall and found myself experimenting with clothing. This initial fascination grew during my summer studying in London. As a humanities major, I was wandering through art museums, stores and all over the city visually taking in everything I could. I journaled my creative inspirations, my overwhelming impressions and then found myself sketching my "ideal outfits" each day. If I had unlimited funds and/or a designer who could create whatever was in my brain, what would I wear? I would think through it and draw it. Lately (and partly inspired by the Friday Fancies series) I've been pulling together looks on Polyvore. Both of these online tools Pinterest and Polyvore) have helped me to clarify and redefine my personal sense of style-- particularly as I further my way into my 30's and walk that fine line of growing up but appearing youthful and un-frumpy.

Go ahead and experiment and play with your style! You might be surprised what comes to the surface when you start gathering and collecting. How have you discovered your personal style? Did it come naturally (like it appears to come for my little 6 year old niece)? Or did it take some conscious effort and attention (like moi)?

Ask A Coach

I received so many fun questions, it will take some time to work through them all. Without further ado, here is today's question:

What quality do you admire most in a person?

Qualities to admire are subjective, so I'm expressing my own opinion here. I struggled to narrow it down to one, so I'm picking two: Authenticity and Selflessness.

Authenticity is that wonderful way of being yourself in whatever situation you find yourself in. This is a quality I strive for. One of my pet peeves is when people put on a different persona in one environment, especially when it's a complete disconnect from their authentic selves. I know lots of people would disagree with me and they love the PR spins and to don various personae depending on the situation. I personally think it's dumb. I love that someone at church could recognize me at home or at work. I love to be Heidi -often messy, hardly perfect, but authentically me. I strive to let others do the same.

Selflessness is that awe-inspiring ability to put others first. This is one I struggle with, and always have. I am not the woman who needs to be told to take some time out for herself -that comes quite naturally. I remind myself everyday to look out for the needs of others and to consider what will make someone else happy. When I take the time to do it, I'm pretty great at serving and helping. It just doesn't come naturally to me. I wish it did and I hope in time it will. My career is a big help in this area. Every day for hours and hours I have the opportunity to see the world through the eyes of my clients. Their perspective and growth teaches me so much.

Wanderlust

Wanderlust: is a strong desire for or impulse to wander or travel and explore the world.

I naively believed that after two years in Prague, 18 months in Bulgaria and a semester abroad in London my Wanderlust would be cured. If you had asked me back in July, when I replanted my feet on U.S. soil I'd have told you that my life was changed forever, but all I craved was to settle down, be married, buy a house and have slews of babies. Hmmmmmmmm.

It hasn't even been a year yet. Next year I'm planning a trip to Costa Rica. I'm dying to explore a tropical rainforest, walk around volcanos and lounge on the beach . . . In 2013 I'll be lounging on the beaches in the South of France. I studied french in college and although it seemed to have melted away under the pressure of bulgarian and other slavic tongues, it's dying to be dredged out and revisited. I want to rent a villa near the sea and live like a french woman for a few months. I can coach and write from a villa in France, non?

Reality for me is this: I love to travel and more particularly, spend chunks of time abroad. I'd rather spend my money and time exploring the world than investing in a house and being a slave to a mortgage to pay for it. Time will come when I'm, by neccessity, more settled in my life, but until then I'll be saying Bon Voyage until this wanderlust is squashed.

Rainstorms and Lover

It's storming right now. I love the sound of rain pattering on sky lights and the wind zipping through the backyard. It's only April and already the weather feels like summer, with random storms and lightning in the sky. I love it. I love lightning and thunder and that fabulous excuse to curl up with a book (or a blog) and explore a new world and beautiful images.

I discovered this gorgeous video via Alilovescurtis and I knew I had to share. You know how much I love dance. Did you know I was a ballerina? For so many years I trucked off to dance every night, pointe shoes in a bag. I would dance and dance and then dance some more. Even to this day, technical strings of movement come much easier to me than cheer dance or precision dance moves counted (1-2-3-4). It's usually the other way around, but not for me. Happy post-Easter Weekend!

A week ago I decided that I could take a "little break" on my new dietary changes for holidays such as Easter, my birthday, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. This "little break" turned into an "all-out-eat-whatever-I-want" break for the week. It was delicious. Above and beyond all the fun sweets and treats, I love the times when family gets together to eat, laugh, talk, and play. These holidays are extra special now that there are kids in the family again- all excited to run around looking for eggs, eat Peeps, and sing impromptu concerts for us. I love the infectious energy and sweetness of children. I love their unique personalities. There's so much to learn from them.

One topic that has been on my mind the last few weeks is the topic of sweetness and kindness. I love dry humor but is it just me or is the world tottering on the edge of perpetually mean and sarcastic? Lately I've felt bombarded by people "joking" in harsh ways that leave me aching and raw and a little sad. I'm sure I've been guilty of teasing in the wrong way . . . in fact I KNOW that I have. Still, it's something I'd like to change about myself and about the people I let into my inner circle.

I think the world needs less harshness and more kindness. In Prague there were a few older couples serving at our church and every time I saw them, they'd smother me in high praise. It was as if they had magical glasses that allowed them to see the most beautiful parts of me and simply gloss past all my apparent and overwhelming faults. Initially I was taken aback by the effusive and consistent praise. Don't worry I got used to it quickly. The most wonderful part was that these people had mastered the art of being genuine. I could recognize truth in what they said. It was never lip-service or flattery. They honestly saw the best in others and felt the need to express it to them as often as possible. Some days I wake up and I crave my interactions with these wonderful people. I miss being around people who choose to see the best in others. This morning I was thinking about them and I realized I can do more than miss them; I can choose to become like them.

It's time to be a little more thoughtful, a little more caring and a little more effusive when I see something great. It's time to gloss over the faults of others and highlight the beauty in them. I think it's also time to be a little more careful in choosing who I will open myself up to and to be a little more discerning with those I spend my time. As much as people pride themselves on their "thick skin", I like the soft parts of me. Sure, they are the parts that make me hurt when people are rough with me, but they are also the same parts that help me to be more loving, more thoughtful, more kind and more giving.

I'm ready to stop laughing at someone else's expense and to spend more time helping others feel special. Is there anyone in your life that helps you feel like your very best self?

Hola Friends!

Okay, so this week has been a workout dud. I finally started feeling healthy YESTERDAY! Can you believe how long the crud I had lasted? I made it to one dance class this week (and wanted to die afterwards) and that's it. Next week will have to be better. Still, I kept my eating resolutions. Life sans sugar is getting more acceptable and I found a delicious wholegrain homemade pizza option making my life infinitely easier. The results????
